Six Things That Have Bothered Me

I've spent quite a bit of time keeping Mom company. Which until recently has meant spending a lot of time parked in front of the TV. Not all of that time has been spent watching quality programming, but most of it has been entertaining if not educational. This may not be a politically correct post so I apologize if anyone is offended in advance, but this blog serves as an online journal for me. Here are some of the things I have been concerned about:

1. I love Disney. Seriously. I am one of those crazy people who still breaks out into songs from cartoon movies or inserts movie quotes into conversation. And takes especially large amounts of pleasure when nobody knows that I did it. But I have not been impressed by the Pass the Plate clips. I understand the current trend to go back to historical food production methods and the trend for organic, but if you are going to have people on your clips, at least make sure they know what they are talking about. One gal said they were organic farmers because they didn't use any pesticides. Many organic farmers still use pesticides, they are just considered natural chemicals which may need to be applied more frequently than synthetic compounds.

2. We watched a segment on an outdoor pig operation on Jobs That Bite and I wanted to curl up and die. If you want to raise pigs outside, that's fine with me, but when your pens are nothing but rocky mud-holes then I have a problem.

It's a fact that pigs destroy pens...want a lot cleared quickly? Throw some pigs out on it.

But don't leave them in rocky, muddy pens. Yea it may be more natural, but it also makes for a dangerous working environment for the people (trust me I've tripped over muddy ruts and almost been trampled by sows while trying to feed in dirt lots) and muddy pits contribute to arthritis and pneumonia troubles in pigs. Even if they do help them cool down. And if you are going to work pigs, please don't just chase them around the pens and try to catch them. Use a sorting board or herd them into a smaller area, don't try and grab piglets while the sow is coming at you. Talk about dangerous!

3. Don't try and tell me that Almond Milk tastes better than dairy milk. I've tried it and they don't even compare. At all.

4. I've been reading voraciously while I've been home. When you spend years doing school work, any opportunity you have to read...and read a lot...is happily taken advantage of. I was reading this book until I hit this passage. Then I threw the book down the hallway. And never bothered to finish it. You are more than welcome to buy whatever food you deem necessary. But I look at organic foods like I look at grain-free dog foods-I could care less.

5. Watching Buying Hawaii is extremely entertaining and highly confusing. Almost every person who has ever been on that show, that I have seen at least, wants to grow their own food to save themselves money at the grocery store and gets really excited about huge vegetable patches at their new homes.

My question is: How many vegetables do these people actually consume on a daily basis??

If I were trying to save money at the grocery store I wouldn't be talking about vegetable gardens, I'd be throwing a milk cow in the backyard to save myself the $9 a gallon prices and maybe even a couple pigs or something. The thought of eating that much kale just makes me ill. *shudder*

6. Tropical Smoothie: Meatless chicken nuggets are no longer chicken nuggets. They are tofu nuggets. Or "Beyond Meat" nuggets. But definitely not chicken nuggets. Just saying.

I'm not perfect. I don't have all the answers. I don't judge other people's personal choices but I know what I like and I stick with it. I can be obnoxiously stubborn and opinionated but hey, we can't all be perfect. I think I will stick with my dairy and meat to keep me going and continue watching Disney...even if I don't always agree with everything shown on the channels.

  1. So glad to see you back blogging again!
I'm with you on the bothersome things. But, there are far more than six...really. However, that is a rant for another time.
You mentioned kale which sent me down a rabbit trail of thought (doesn't take much) and I thought I would share this... http://www.nwedible.com/2012/08/tragedy-healthy-eater.html While it is meant to be humorous, I see a lot of similarities to the attitudes of many consumers. If you haven't read it, maybe you will find it amusing and you won't chuck it down the hall.
Wishing you well as you eat your meat, drink your milk and watch Disney over and over. (doesn't sound like a bad life) LOL

    1. There are so many more bothersome things than these 6. And so many more that are truly bothersome...but I try to keep the negative thoughts and rants to a few things at a time. Otherwise we would go crazy right?

I just read the link and adore it! And it is entirely true that that is the way the consumers think. Being back in the land of the rich and crazy (hello Middleburg, VA) has reminded me how bizarre food choices can truly be. I think it's great that we are so lucky to have these choices but all the hatred and the fighting is just getting out of control!

There could easily be a lot worse existences than that :)
